Ricketts Statement on Biden v. Nebraska Decision
June 30, 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling in Biden v. Nebraska overturning the student loan cancellation scheme issued by President Biden’s Department of Education last year. The plan would have transferred the student loan debt of those who have not paid it back onto all American taxpayers, including those who paid off or chose not to take out student loans. The cost to taxpayers would have been an estimated $400 billion.
Ricketts was also a co-sponsor of a Congressional Review Act resolution disapproving of the scheme, which recently passed the Senate by a vote of 52-46. When he was governor, Ricketts joined 21 governors in sending a letter to President Biden opposing the student loan scheme.
“President Biden’s student loan bailout put electricians and plumbers on the hook for the bills of doctors and lawyers,” Ricketts said. “I am grateful the Supreme Court vindicated Nebraska’s argument and stopped this unfair and illegal scheme to shift unpaid debts to Americans who chose not to attend college or worked hard to pay off their own loans. I want to thank Doug Peterson, our former Attorney General, and Mike Hilgers, our current Attorney General, for their work in achieving a great victory for the law and for taxpayers in Nebraska and across the country.”
